For older adults, keeping busy with enjoyable activities is atop priority. Sometimes getting exercise and maintaining social ties prove to be a challenge for them.  Active adult living involves more than just remaining active. Having a to-do list is a way of staying active and healthy. March is a perfect time to begin a new routine. Here are some ideas to add to the to-do list.

Tackle Simple Spring Cleaning Chores

In March, the weather is volatile – swinging from warm and sunny to cold and rainy. On the overcast days, it is the best time to tackle some spring cleaning.

Vacuuming: The activity of vacuuming can be very aerobic.  So, along with the floors, go ahead and clean the upholstery, furniture, and cushions. Get under the furniture, baseboards, and floors next to the baseboards.
Wipe light switch covers, doors, and door jambs: Another activity that gets the heart pumping is wiping down surfaces that get little attention during the rest of the year.   So get a soft rag and a simple cleaning solution and wipe down doorknobs, light switch covers, door jams, spots on walls, and other frequently touched surfaces.

Declutter:  Spring is the time to lighten the load.  Go through drawers, cabinets, and closets removing items that have not been used in the last year.  Recycle, sell or donate the things you pull out.

Garden:  On the days with pleasant weather, get outside and work on that garden.  Flowers can add color to a drab yard or balcony.  Vegetables and herbs are so satisfying to grow and eat.  Whether you have a plot in the yard or containers on the patio, now is the time to plan and start planting.  In a few months, you’ll be glad you did.

Home maintenance:  As the season changes, it is time to have the HVAC system serviced.  Make sure the air conditioning system is ready for the summer months.  Do you have a gas/oil tank that needs to be refilled?  A septic system that needs to be pumped?  Gutters than need cleaned?  A sprinkler system turned on?  Add these items to your March to-do list.  Spring is an excellent time to check off these items for a carefree summer.

Creating a to-do list helps organize time for each project.  In an active adult community,  you might organize groups to get the projects done.  Helping each other with chores, lightens the load for everyone and can be very social as you chat while completing the tasks at hand.
