Summer is the perfect time to gather with friends and have a good time.  The weather is, and parties can be held outdoors.  Some 55+ people don’t enjoy hosting parties because it can be a lot of work.  There is the preparation and planning before the party and then the clean up afterward, but socializing is important in 55+ living communities to help residents maintain healthy lifestyles.  So, here are a few tips to ease the stress and allow the hosts to enjoy the party.

When planning a summer party remember the whole point is to enjoy the great weather, relax, and appreciate time with friends.  So take it easy in your planning and prep.  Use some shortcuts.

Use disposable plates, cups, and utensils.  Many stores sell colorful paper plates and napkins. No need for lots of party decorations merely pick a color or design that reflects the mood you want at your party.  There is no fear of breakage with paper plates, especially if the party is around a swimming pool.  Clean up is quick and easy.

Serve prepared foods from the store, but add your personal touch to make it unique.  Buy the ready-made salad, but serve with a homemade dressing (throw in some dried cranberries or chopped nuts for some extra pizazz).  Place some fresh strawberry slices on those store bought cupcakes.  Add some fresh celery and chives to that grocery store potato salad to add some color and crunch. By adding some fresh ingredients to prepared foods, the taste and eye appeal are enhanced and less work than making the dishes from scratch.

Have refreshing drinks on hand.  Create fruit infused water by adding some sliced summer fruit to your water pitcher or dispenser.  It not only quenches that summer thirst but is also a colorful presentation.  Keep the cocktails light and refreshing using fruit and tonics.  Summer wines are sweet whites, rose and sparkling.

An old-fashioned ice cream social is a great gathering.  Who doesn’t like ice cream?  Ice cream and toppings are all that is needed.  The list of toppings is endless:  fresh fruit, nuts, sauces (think chocolate or caramel), candies, cereals, crushed cookies all go great on ice cream.  You can even have everyone bring their favorite topping to share.  Minimum work – enjoyable for all.  Lactose problems?  No worries, there are plenty of lactose-free ice creams available.

So don’t waste all that great weather sitting in your house, get out an have fun with neighbors, friends, and family.  You’ll be glad you did.
